We seem to be receiving a lot of calls for augers lately. Let’s take another look at utility augers and auger parts.
Utility Digger Derricks use augers to dig round holes. When customers contact Utility Equipment Parts for augers and auger parts – we assist by asking a few questions to help supply the correct parts.
1st – How wide do you want the hole?
- Dirt Augers range from 8” to 48” diameter.
- Rock Augers and Rock Ripper Augers go up to 36” diameter.
2nd – What kind of soil are you working with?
- Dirt augers work efficiently in dirt, sand, silt – including clay, gravel, and loose stones or rocks and even frozen soil.
- The teeth of dirt augers are flat which offers maximum digging.
- Rock Augers, Rock Ripper Augers and Pressure Diggers are needed when digging into solid non-fracturable rock and compacted soil that require tough bullet-shaped carbide teeth.
3rd – How deep are you digging the hole?
- The overall length of the auger is measured from the top of the hub to the bottom of the pilot bit.
- The most common auger lengths are 84”, 102”, or 104”.
- If the hole needs to be deeper than the common lengths, there are auger extensions available – many people call them Kelly Bars.
- Extensions are offered in lengths of 5, 6 or 7 feet – the most common is 6 feet.
- The most common length of flighting (the steel blades doing the digging) is 60” (for a 104” auger).
4th – What size is the Hex Hub?
- Dirt and Rock Augers have a female end (hub) that will fit onto the Auger Drive Motor male end.
- The most common hex sizes are 2”, 2 ½”, and 2 5/8”.
